Favorite sins
I've been studying President Nelson's talk after we discussed it in our weekly sister’s zoom call. One of the the things we discussed was about giving away our favorite sins.
President Nelson has a footnote for favorite sins (p.s.-- his footnotes are always so helpful. He seriously is just trying to help people study and connect things. I like to imagine following his footnotes is what it would be like to study the scriptures with President Nelson!). Anyway his footnote to favorite sins says,
"See the account of King Lamoni’s father in Alma 22, especially Alma 22:18."
Alma 22:18 says: "O God, Aaron hath told me that there is a God; and if there is a God, and if thou art God, wilt thou make thyself known unto me, and I will give away all my sins to know thee."
I loved this connection because King Lamoni is saying that by giving away his sins, it will help him to come to know Jesus Christ.
It's beautiful to think about, that when you stop doing your favorite sins Jesus is teaching you how to become like Him. And the more you become like Him, the happier you feel. You don't feel a loss for the things you used to do, instead you feel more whole and happy.
It made me really excited to think about. Oftentimes when we think about getting rid of sin, especially a FAVORITE sin, we think about how hard it is going to be and the transition and how we are going to cope. But I loved thinking about King Lamoni, and that I could give things up and instead of losing something, I am actually gaining something. I am gaining living a life like Jesus Christ that is more happy and whole than my current life with sin in it.
Anyway this has been on my mind for a couple of days, and it's really been helpful to me, so I wanted to share it with you guys too in case it is helpful to you too.
